The Department of Mathematics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has taken a proactive step towards promoting mathematics education and enhancing math skills among students in Junior High Schools (JHS) within the local community. This initiative aims to instil a strong foundation in mathematics and cultivate a passion for the subject among young learners.

Three schools, namely KNUST JHS, Ayeduase R/C JHS, and Emmanuel Methodist International School at Oduom, have been selected as the beneficiaries of this program. Each week, a team of dedicated mathematicians from the Department of Mathematics visits these schools to impart their expertise and facilitate engaging math sessions.

Maths outreach

The primary objective of this program is to create an interactive and stimulating learning environment, enabling students to grasp fundamental mathematical concepts more effectively. Through the use of innovative teaching techniques, practical exercises, and real-life examples, the Department of Mathematics strives to make math more relatable and enjoyable for students.

Maths outreachThe sessions conducted at each school cover various topics and subtopics, aligning with the curriculum requirements for Junior High School students. These topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving strategies. By delving into these subjects, the program aims to enhance students' problem-solving abilities, critical thinking skills, and logical reasoning.

Moreover, the program goes beyond the traditional classroom setup, incorporating hands-on activities, group discussions, and interactive exercises to foster active participation and engagement among the students. This dynamic approach encourages students to think creatively and apply mathematical principles to real-world scenarios, strengthening their analytical skills.

The Department of Mathematics at KNUST recognizes the importance of a strong foundation in mathematics, as it serves as a cornerstone for various academic and professional pursuits. By reaching out to Junior High Schools they aim to bridge any gaps in math education, ensuring that students are well-prepared for future educational endeavors and career pathways that require a solid understanding of mathematics.

Maths outreach

The impact of this program has been overwhelmingly positive, with participating students showcasing improved confidence and a deeper appreciation for mathematics. Teachers at the respective Junior High Schools have also commended the efforts of the Department of Mathematics, acknowledging the significant difference it has made in the students' learning experiences.

Moving forward, the Department of Mathematics at KNUST remains committed to expanding this outreach program to more JHSs in the local community, thereby reaching a more significant number of students and empowering them with strong mathematical skills. They aim to create a sustainable model that can be replicated and adapted in other educational institutions nationwide, contributing to the overall improvement of mathematics education in Ghana.
